June/July, 2010
“Daddy, why do you have to go to work every day?” As my six year old ponders Daddy leaving every morning I realize that she is growing up; and time is marching on. Any explanation about mortgage, retirement, property taxes or savings may fall on deaf ears with Danica, so it is difficult to explain why I leave for work every day...
Often in this Industry, which we all treat as one big Family, we may temporarily forget about our real Family. The days, seasons and years go by so quickly and this valuable times slip by. As the season for most of us is well underway, do not forget about our loved ones and how much patience they have with all of us that strive for responsible perfection every day.
As a young Assistant Golf Course Superintendent I recall listening to Mr. Dean Piller at a Conference. He spoke on the values of a strong family relationship and to never let your job or career control your life. Thanks Dean, I had no idea what that meant at 25 years old, but I do now…at almost 40 years. And Thanks to Mr. Bruce Thrasher for not letting me come to work every day, even though I tried – my family thanks you for it as well.
I am very active on the committee to plan the Conference for Vancouver in 2011. We look forward to bringing the most updated information to all of our members, the members of the BCGSA and CGSA next March. Should anyone have any suggestions to help us with the Conference planning please feel free to contact me at 604 309 8690 or

The TARS stop in Port Alberni was a big success. Thank you to Steve White, Golf Course Superintendent at the Alberni Golf Club for hosting the event. If a well drained facility (sportsfield, golf course or otherwise) is one of your goals please commit the time to listen to Mr. Peter Sorokovsky presentation on “Looking Good in Stripes” – you will not be disappointed.
Mr. Rousseau continues to steer the ship for all of us. His success can be aided by input from the membership. There are several sub-committees that are and already have been formed, with regards to the pesticide challenges, research, conference planning, etc. If you have any interest in becoming a part and lending a hand please contact myself or Jerry Rousseau. This call goes out to all of our satellite members from around Western Canada, the Kootenays, the North, the Island, and the Okanagan-conference calls, e-mails and the telephone all help us be closer and more efficient.
So remember June 20th, all you Dad’s, somebody wants to show you how much they care about you. As always please feel free to contact me anytime. If you wish to contact me on June 20th, I will be at Como Lake with my daughter and my Father-in-Law…for the first bite of the day!
Each Day of our Lives we make deposits in the memory banks of our children -Charles R. Swindoll
Respectfully submitted,
David Duncan
